Google Ads Tip #41 by Petra Manos of The Quantified Web. We manage Google Ads and Google Analytics projects for our clients.

If Google displays Eligible status it means that your ads are active and showing to people.

If it’s Eligible (Learning), it means you’ve recently created or changed a campaign and Google needs time to learn how to serve your bidding strategy given the new change. The Learning period usually lasts 7 days since the last significant edit.

Your campaigns are likely to go into Learning if they are new, or if you have made a large change to the budget, or you have changed the bidding strategy or target.

When your campaigns go into Learning mode, Google automatically throws out any historical learning in that campaign. If you have a campaign that has been working well but you need to make a change, you do NOT want to suddenly change the bidding strategy, target or make large changes to budgets! If you do so and it goes into Learning, then your current algorithm will be started anew. You may not be able to get your past performance back even with the same settings, or it may take a while to re-learn.

If you need to make a big change, duplicate the campaign and pause the old one so that you can get it back again if needed.
